What is a scrunchie?
A scrunchie is a hair elastic for medium to long hair from the 1980s. It's characterized by the elastic being placed inside a piece of velvet fabric. Because the elastic is smaller than the inner diameter of the velvet, the fabric frays. This gives it the casual look of the scrunchie we know today.

Where does the name come from?
David Riley's lecture, "Elastic Youth: Interpreting the Scrunchie," reveals that the scrunchie was developed by Jane Reid. She had a dog named Scünci. This was the accessory's very first name. When this product hit the market, it was primarily the younger demographic that rechristened it the Scrunchie in droves, likely because it sounded better.
