What is a scrunchie?
A scrunchie is a hair elastic for medium to long hair from the 80s. It is characterized by the elastic being placed inside a piece of velvet fabric. Because the elastic is smaller than the inner diameter of the velvet, the fabric frays. This gives it the casual look of the scrunchie as we know it.

Where does the name come from?
David Riley's lecture, Elastic Youth: Interpreting the Scrunchie, shows that the scrunchie was developed by Jane Reid. She had a dog named Scünci. This was the very first name of the accessory. When this product came on the market, it was mainly the younger target group that renamed it to Scrunchie in large numbers. Probably because it sounded better.
